Philosophy of Education

I believe that children are natural learners, who need a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere to grow intellectually, emotionally and socially.

I believe that my role as a teacher, is to provide a classroom that invites risk-taking, and sharing of ideas in a safe setting. Each child is a capable individual who can bring different strengths and talents to my classroom to be successful. I try to use each child's strengths to help with his/her weaknesses.

I am a guide in student learning.  I allow students to learn and grow using a variety of techniques and lessons. I incorporate themes, integrated units, projects, group work, individual work, and hands-on learning in order to make children active learners.  I integrate technology into the classroom as much as I can-understanding that students I teach are wired to enjoy technology and learn from it successfully.

My classroom is not a silent classroom.  I enjoy the chatter and buzz that accompanies learning and investigating.  I provide a classroom with high expectations, both academically and behaviorally.  Students know how to behave and what is expected from them.  Using positive reinforcement, I am able to successfully manage a classroom where learning occurs.

I tie learning into the world community to help children become caring and active members of society. I enjoy teaching children about sustainability and helping the world be a better place. I enjoy watching children become aware of the world around them, by developing service learning experience for them.

I believe that it is important to bring into our classroom community members that will enrich our journey. I am constantly searching for new ideas and new teaching strategies that will actively engage each of my students in learning.
